Njambi McGrath - Becoming Njambi / Black Black

Matriarchy, Marriage, Sex and War

Originally from Kenya but living in London for the last decade, Njambi McGrath has become a familiar face on the circuit and at comedy festivals across the UK.

For many years, Njambi was an ‘accidental coconut’ - brown on the outside, but thinking like a white person on the inside. At school, rather than her own history, she learned about Churchill, Shakespeare and Napoleon - because nothing inspires a young girl living in rural Africa more than dead white men.

White people go to poor countries to find themselves - Njambi came to a rich country to lose herself.

In this series of 4 x 15 minute stand-up performances recorded in front of a live audience, Njambi takes us with her on a journey of self-discovery, as she explores how her own tribe functioned before the colonial hurricane wreaked havoc to the functionality of her tribe the Gĩkũyũ of Central Kenya.

Broadcasting on BBC Radio 4 in September 2021.
